PROBLEMS/CHALLENGE/LET'S CHAT:
Today I couldn't help but feel a lot down. A very close family friend of my MIL, Barbara, died 6, almost 7 years ago, I really, really liked her a lot (Q.E.P.D). She was one of the witnesses who signed our Ketubah. I've met her daughter (Marya - /Mah-re-ah/) by the time I met Barbara as well. Barbara was diagnosed with cancer. Marya was pregnant by the time her mom lost the battle to cancer, so Barbara never got to meet Violet. A beautiful, beautiful cute little girl.
Marya, learned one year after Violet was born that she had a tumor on her brain. It was inoperable, she had different treatments to reduce the tumor and she was successful. They told her she got at least 10 years to go. Something happened this summer, on her last check up. They said it started to grow again. This time she decided not to do anything about it, or the treatment she was willing to work with did not do much. I am not quite sure what it was.
My MIL sent us an email today saying that, "Marya was placed in Hospice in an induced coma until she dies."
Apparently, two weeks ago she started feeling agitated and experiencing dementia, so she had agreed to do this to make her passing easier. She is in no pain. The doctors don't know how long it will take, it could be a week or two but...I just think it is shocking and extremely sad.
On one side, I believe what motivated her to do it this way is because she doesn't want to be a burden, to her husband; she may not want her daughter to remember her like that. I spoke to my SIL and she says Marya wanted to go long time ago, she wanted IT to end long time ago. This state does not allow euthanasia. This was the permitted way to go without violating the sate laws.
My understanding of why she did it this way makes me feel better about her going. About her leaving her daughter motherless and her husband a widow. Only a person who is in the same position she was can understand. She has no pain anymore, she is at peace. In my mind are her husband and her daughter. The only thing I can do right now is pray for them.
